After a long wait for the resumption of sporting activities all over the world due to COVID – 19 compulsory shut down, sports lovers across the world eventually heaved a sigh of relief when the German Bundesliga resumed on Saturday, 16th of May, 2020. Watching the German Bundesliga for the past few months has been very interesting most especially with the brilliant performances of different strikers in the league. Out of all those strikers, one particular striker that has brought a lot excitement, power and brilliance to the game is no other than the 19 – year – old Norwegian Borussia Dortmund’s striker – Erling Braut Haaland. Since joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2020 from Austrian Bundesliga club (Red Bull Salzburg), he has scored 13 goals in different competitions including 10 Champions League goals in seven games, thus, became “the quickest player to reach double figures in the competition’s history”. Also, he was said to be the first Dortmund player ever to register a goal on his debut in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. As such, Haaland was named the Bundesliga player of the month in January. Upon resuming for duty on Saturday May 16th, 2020, in the game against Schalke in which he scored in the 29th minute, it appears he has picked up from where he left off in March. Though Haaland was modest about this goal by stating thus; “I’m not the same yet, I haven’t played for seven weeks. But I know that I’ve worked hard during this period and I’m not surprised that I scored”.

In fact, it’s impressive to note that at 19 years old, Haaland has now scored 41 goals in 34 appearances for both Red Bull Salzburg of Austria and Borussia Dortmund of Germany this season averaging a goal within 55.9 minutes. This great feat achieved by this football/soccer talent becomes more interesting by discovering that Cristiano Ronaldo was only able to score 42 goals in all competitions at the age of 23 in 2007/08 season, while Messi scored 41 goals in 2009/10 at the age of 22. Another player who came close was Luis Suarez who hit 40 goals margin across all competitions in 2009/10 at the age of 23. To sum up Haaland’s career goals so far, it’s delightful to note that he has since scored 62 goals in 105 games with eight hat-tricks, which has resulted in appreciation of his market value from 5 million euros to 60 million euros.

Apart from his soccer talent, it will definitely come as a surprise to many sports lovers that this talented soccer star is also an incredible athlete who still “holds the World record for the Longest Standing Long Jump for a five – year – old, which is an impressive 1.63m”. The record he set in 2006. To this end, is Kylian Mbappe still the heir apparent of Messi and Ronaldo or is Erling Haaland poised to shove him aside and get into the big shoes of superstars Ronaldo and Messi instead?
