The 32 – year – old former Nigerian captain and Chelsea’s defensive midfielder – John Obi Mikel decided to call it quit with his Turkish club Trabzonspor on Tuesday, 17th of March, 2020, amidst disagreement with the club’s management over coronavirus pandemic and thereby walked away from 35,000 pounds per week salary contract which would have been valid until 2022. Mikel strongly believes that there is no reason why Turkish Super Lig should still be on when other leagues across the world had been suspended in order to safeguard the lives of the players. According to him; “there is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and don’t want to play football in this situation. Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones in this critical time. Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times”. Report has it that his club disagreed with his strong opinions and they both parted ways amicably.
We will recall that John Obi Mikel was with Chelsea for 11 seasons and won 2 Premier leagues, 3 FA Cups, 1 League cup, 1 Europa league, 1 Champions league and 1 Community shield. He moved to Tianjin TEDA in China when he left Chelsea in 2017, while he also had a stint with Middlesbrough in England in 2019 before signing for Trabzonspor of Turkey in the same year 2019. But looking at the statement of John Obi Mikel critically and with the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world presently, don’t you think that John Obi Mikel is right? Why is Turkish league still on when other leagues across the world have been suspended?
